Interlayer Cation-Controlled Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide in Anhydrous Montmorillonite Clay

چکیده

Widely available natural layered expandable clay minerals (smectites) can sorb carbon dioxide in their interlayer space under specific conditions and hence may show potential for gas separation or sequestration processes. This work presents experimental adsorption desorption measurements of gaseous, sub-critical (p = 0.1 bar up to 20 bar, T ?20 °C 300 °C) on well-characterized anhydrous smectite (Wyoming montmorillonite) focuses the effect cation (size). Using seven alkali alkaline-earth metal cations three quaternary ammonium cations, a wide range ionic radii are studied. Physisorption CO2 is confirmed via infrared spectroscopy measurements. The results that optimally sized cations?comparable thickness monolayer?open make it easily accessible 1.7 mmol g–1. In particular, Cs-exchanged tetramethylammonium-exchanged montmorillonite facilitate rapid sorption even at ambient pressure temperature. These provide valuable insights into applicability widely adsorbent clays capture mitigation climate change.

Fluoride adsorption studies of montmorillonite clay

Batch adsorption studies were conducted to determine the effects of contact time and temperature on fluoride removal by montmorillonite clay at neutral pH. The adsorption of fluoride was studied at four different temperatures, viz. 30, 40, 50 and 60°C. The kinetics of adsorption as well as adsorption isotherms at different temperatures were studied. Adsorption obeyed both Langmuir and Freundlic...

Intercalation and Retention of Carbon Dioxide in a Smectite Clay promoted by Interlayer Cations

A good material for CO2 capture should possess some specific properties: (i) a large effective surface area with good adsorption capacity, (ii) selectivity for CO2, (iii) regeneration capacity with minimum energy input, allowing reutilization of the material for CO2 adsorption, and (iv) low cost and high environmental friendliness. Smectite clays are layered nanoporous materials that may be goo...

-exchanged montmorillonite K10 clay-catalyzed direct carboxylation of terminal alkynes with carbon dioxide

A new, simple and straight-forward protocol for direct carboxylation of terminal alkynes has been developed using Cu-montmorillonite K10 clay as a heterogeneous catalyst and CO2 as the C1 carbon feedstock. Also coupling of terminal alkynes with CO2 (1 atm) in the presence of alkyl halides has been achieved under the same reaction conditions, thereby providing access to a variety of functionaliz...

Controlled Release of Agrochemicals Intercalated into Montmorillonite Interlayer Space

Periodic application of agrochemicals has led to high cost of production and serious environmental pollution. In this study, the ability of montmorillonite (MMT) clay to act as a controlled release carrier for model agrochemical molecules has been investigated. Urea was loaded into MMT by a simple immersion technique while loading of metalaxyl was achieved by a rotary evaporation method. The su...

Surface Area of Montmorillonite from the Dynamic Sorption of Nitrogen a N D Carbon Dioxide

A b s t r a c t S u r f a c e area determinations were made on a montmorillonite with various cations emplaced on the exchangeable sites, utilizing nitrogen and carbon dioxide as adsorbates at 77~ and 195~ respectively, in a dynamic system. From the fraction of a Mississippi montmorillonite less than about 1/x in size, samples were prepared by replacing the original exchangeable cations with Li...
